1956 Columbia Records announce that all future pop releases will be on 45 rpm

1967 Tom Donahue, a San Francisco DJ, starts to programme 'progressive' music on KPMX. The format embraces the best of today's rock and roll, folk, traditional and city blues, reggae, electronic music and some jazz and classical selections.

1975 Ritchie Blackmore leaves Deep Purple

1979 Boomtown Rats play California Music Festival on first US tour.

1983 President Reagan overturns James Watts's decision of two days ago and invites Beach Boys to perform.

1990 Elton John dedicates "Candle in the Wind" to AIDS patient Ryan White during his performance at Farm Aid IV. White dies later that night. Other performers at the Festival, held at the Indiana Hoosierdome, include Neil Young, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Guns N' Roses and Jackson Browne.
