1956 Elvis Presley records I Got a Woman and Heartbreak Hotel during his first-ever session at RCA studios (Nashville).

1963 Cliff Richard's film Summer Holiday premieres in London

1964 Georgie Fame makes early TV appearance on Ready, Steady, Go TV show performing his first single, Do the Dog.

1965 Peter Cook and Dudley Moore begin new TV series, Not Only But Also. Guest on his first show - John Lennon!

1981 John Lennon's Double Fantasy LP goes platinum.

1968 Aretha Franklin earns her fourth gold single with "Chain of Fools."

1971 Bob Dylan accompanies country star Earl Scruggs on "East Virginia Blues" and "Nashville Skyline Rag" for a public documentary.

1981 John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Double Fantasy" goes platinum, a month after Lennon's assassination. The album stays at Number One for eight weeks.

1981 "The Pirates of Penzance" by Gilbert and Sullivan opens on Broadway, starring pop singers Linda Ronstadt and Rex Smith.The show will later be made into a movie starring Smith and Ronstadt.

1987 With Walk Like an Egyptian at No. 1 in the US for the fourth week, Bangles equal the longest run at the top by a girl group (previous record held by Chiffons, Supremes and Emotions).

1997 The Godfather of Soul, James Brown, gets his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
